Writing Your First Article

Writing can seem like a daunting and overwhelming task. That is why we are here to make it easier for you. Follow our step by step guide and get published on The Post.

1. Determine your Topic

First things first, identify what you want to write about. Choose a topic you are both knowledgeable and passionate about. It could be lifestyle, beauty, business, politics, fashion, marketing, productivity or anything else that you are passionate about. Another great way to determine a topic is with a question. For e.g. How to get verified on Instagram?

Now that you know what you are writing about, try and not get to caught up in the title. When writing the first article, many writers waste to much time determining the title, if it doesn’t come to you effortlessly, leave it for now.

2. Create Sub Sections/Bullets

Now that your topic is identified, create natural subsections or bullet points that flow. Or you can start by writing the questions you want the article to answer.

For example, if you are writing an article about how to create a website. The natural subsections will be

Functionality required in the website
Products/Pages
Budget
Self Build or Outsource the Build
Design & Copy
Content & Project Management
Testing
Launch

3. Fill in the blanks

Now that you have the subsections, bullets identified, fill in the blacks and elaborate. Present a natural story that takes the reader from one section to the next. Explain as you would do to someone who doesn’t know anything on your topic. Don’t forget to include links and references

4. Concluding Points

Now in the conclusion, focus on what you want the reader to take away with them and get started on the conclusion. Perhaps, consider a call to action at the end of the article for the reader to follow. Also, don’t forget to include any links to your profile.
