Representing India on the International Stage – Meet Vaishakhi Haria of Splash Salons

In the competitive world of hairstyling, few stories are as inspiring as that of Vaishakhi Haria. Embarking on her journey straight out of junior college, she immersed herself in the rigorous training of a top hairdressing academy. Balancing this with academic commitments, Vaishakhi’s relentless drive led to the opening of her first salon at just 19 years old. Defying the odds and surpassing seasoned peers, she not only established a successful business but also represented India on prestigious international platforms, proving that age is no barrier to excellence. In an exclusive conversation she says,

What inspired you to start your journey in the hairdressing industry at such a young age, and how did you initially become interested in hairstyling?

From a young age, I was drawn to the world of hairdressing. My passion began early, leading me to enroll in a hairdressing academy right after junior college. I balanced a demanding schedule, attending college in the mornings and dedicating my afternoons and evenings to mastering hairstyling.

At 19, I launched my first salon while simultaneously completing my higher education. The biggest challenge was overcoming the age gap between myself and my more experienced colleagues. It was difficult to assert my vision and gain respect, but my determination and persistence helped me carve out my path and successfully bring my vision to life.

Can you share some of the most significant milestones in your career, from establishing your first salon in 2009 to representing India on the international stage in Malaysia?

One major turning point happened in my life when I was chosen amongst thousands of hairstylists to be a part of the Identity Artist team of L’Oreal Professionnel for 7 years. I am truly grateful to get that opportunity. Another major milestone in my life was when I became a part of Schwarzkopf Professional’s Artistic team known as Hair Artist Kollectiv. And the biggest one so far is when I became the 1st Independent Indian Hairstylist to share a stage with International artists in April 2024 in Malaysia. Representing my country on a global platform was a dream come true.

How did studying Commerce influence your approach to managing and expanding your salon business alongside your creative pursuits in hairstyling?

Somehow I was always inspired by good businessmen. The way they created structures, systems, streamlined business models & more. By taking up commerce I got a chance to deep dive into accounts and managerial studies. I took up General Management as my subject for post graduation as well so that I could learn more and more how businesses are run. I always knew that being a successful hairstylist is one thing and running a business along with that is a whole different ball game.

You are known for mentoring aspiring hairstylists. What drives your passion for education in the hairstyling industry, and how do you approach mentoring the next generation?

When I was doing my foundation course in hairdressing, I realized that the basics are so very important. Later when I started working on the floor, I understood even more about the importance of the right education. Hairdressing is not just about cutting and coloring hair or providing spa services to your customer. It is about going deep down into the basics of understanding hair structure, hair colour is about understanding chemistry.

With my journey as an educator I want to spread maximum awareness about hair science. Most hairstylists also are very successful individually but the salons overall may not do well. Through my journey I want to spread business awareness also.

Being selected for L’Oreal Professionnel’s Identity Artist team and joining Schwarzkopf Professional’s Artistic team are significant achievements. How have these experiences shaped your career and professional growth?

Being a part of these to exceptional brands has been one of the biggest learning curves. The constant need for getting better at what I do kept me going. I understood a lot about quality work & international standards.

As a Creative Ambassador for Schwarzkopf Professional, how do you stay ahead of the latest trends and innovations in hairstyling, and how do you incorporate them into your work?

Experiment is the key! I keep experimenting with different styles & looks. I also try to keep track of the latest fashion trends being introduced globally so make sure I am at par with them.

With two salons already and a third opening in August 2024, what are your future plans for expanding your salon business, and what new ventures or projects are you most excited about?

I am extremely excited for my upcoming salon at Juhu in August 2024. I want to explore more in opening boutique hair salons & specialized services for hair.
